Skin Allergy Testing

In those patients suffering from chronic and recurrent skin rashes, skin allergy testing may be helpful in diagnosing an underlying cause. Allergic contact dermatitis is an itchy eruption caused by contact of specific allergens with the skin. There are many known allergens encompassing a broad range of categories including metals, preservatives, and fragrances. Patch tests are used to determine if a patient is allergic to specific allergens. In this service, small patches are placed on a patient's back and left on for 48 hours. The patches are then removed and the patient is evaluated to determine if there are any positive reactions. Once an allergen has been detected, patients can avoid products containing it and experience resolution of their rash.
